Suleyman suffered serious injuries after the attack on Alvanley Gardens, Camden at around 4.30pm on Thursday, January 29. He was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition after being stabilised at the scene.
Suleyman died on Monday, February 9. The day after the stabbing, Friday, January 30, a 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Following the victim’s death, police have now launched a murder investigation. Suleyman’s family is being supported by specialist officers.
Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart, who leads policing in the area, said: “My thoughts remain with Suleyman’s family and friends at this unimaginably difficult time.
“I am aware of concerns in the local community, but I would like to reassure people that this is believed to have been an isolated incident and there is no information at this time to suggest this was a racially-motivated attack. We have increased patrols in the local area and I would ask anyone with concerns to speak to my officers.
“A 21-year-old man has already been charged with attempted murder in connection with this incident. I want to express my thanks to the first responders, who were on the scene within minutes, and the members of the public who did everything they could to save Suleyman’s life.
“Their actions gave his family the opportunity to say goodbye.”
The investigation continues. Anyone with information, CCTV or dash cam footage of the incident is asked to contact police on 101, quoting CAD 5195/29JAN or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
