Rose West is considered one of the UK’s most notorious serial killers and is serving a whole life order for her crimes, but has reportedly cultivated something of a “mother hen” persona inside
Rose West’s face “nearly exploded” and went “bright red” when she was asked a disturbing question by her fellow inmates, it has been claimed. Serving a whole-life order for the murders of ten girls and women, crimes she committed with her husband, Fred West, Rose is regarded as one of the most notorious serial killers in the UK.
Carrying out sexual abuse, torture, and the murder of at least ten people, two of whom were their own children, the couple turned the now-demolished 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester into a “House of Horrors”.
Unlike her depraved husband, who evaded justice by hanging himself in prison before trial, Rose was convicted in 1995 and now resides in the Rivendell unit at HMP New Hall, a closed-category women’s jail in Flockton, near Wakefield.
Rose, who has changed her name to Jennifer Jones, has reportedly cultivated something of a “mother hen” persona in recent times. And, according to a former inmate named Stephanie, she likes to watch David Attenborough programmes.
Meanwhile, an unnamed inmate has claimed that the convicted killer would attempt to make friends with people, fixing up their hair and applying make-up, and made cakes on a Friday, something that developed into a “sort of thing” among inmates and staff.
In her description of West’s nature, the lag, who “saw a lot of her”, characterised her as “quite arrogant” and akin to “some sort of celebrity”.
In fact, she even claimed that West had prison staff “wrapped around her little finger”.
She told The Mail: “They were always asking if she was OK. The screws told us that she had to be protected because she was such a high-profile prisoner. Me and my mate once asked if she did it – kill her kids. Her face nearly exploded.
“She went bright red and started shouting ‘miss, miss’ – calling for the guards. She was saying, ‘They are harassing me… they are calling me a murderer’. She went right off on one saying, ‘I didn’t kill my kids, I didn’t do anything wrong’.”
It comes after Stephanie revealed the chilling words of advice West shared with her before she was set free. In a first-person piece for The Sun, the 28-year-old former inmate described her first encounter with 72-year-old West.
West introduced herself and questioned Stephanie about her name, dubbing it “lovely” once she learned what it was. Stephanie also claimed that the child killer has a “favourite animal” in Madagascar, reportedly “some kind of hedgehog”, and even sews.
She also indicated that West had DVDs in her cell and would exchange her cornflakes for porridge with the other inmates. But it is her final words to Stephanie that are perhaps the most notable of all.
Rose allegedly said: “You never, ever want to spend your life in prison like me – and if you meet anyone that’s bad, you just make sure you run to the police.”
