The family of a student stabbed to death while on his way home from university shared a touching tribute to the ‘good boy who loved his family’. A teenager has been arrested
A student who was stabbed to death was on his way to enjoy one of his favourite pastimes, his family have revealed as they paid tribute to the “good boy”.
Khaleed Oladipo was named as the De Montfort University student who was knifed in Leicester city centre on Tuesday evening. The 20-year-old, from London, was living in Leicester while studying cyber security at the Midlands university.
The young man’s devastated family described the tragic young man as “extremely loved”, while Leicestershire Police confirmed an 18-year-old was arrested on suspicion of his murder and he remains in custody while an investigation continues.
Khaleed’s family said the young man loved football and was a huge Arsenal fan, adding that they believe he was on his way to catch his team play on Tuesday evening. Khaleed’s team beat London rivals Chelsea 1-0 in their Carabao Cup semi final clash.
In a touching tribute, the student’s family said: “We cannot begin to put into words how sad we are to have lost Khaleed. He was an extremely loved son, brother, uncle, boyfriend and friend. Khaleed was a good boy who loved his family. He was in his second year at university, and we were so proud of him.
“One of his main passions was football and he had played since the age of four. He was an Arsenal supporter and we believe he was on his way home to watch the game later that night when he was stabbed and killed.”
Leicestershire Police added that a post-mortem carried out after Khaleed’s death found he died as a result of a stab wound to the chest. The student was taken to hospital after the attack in the city’s Oxford Street, but he was later pronounced dead.
His family paid tribute to the emergency workers and pedestrians who helped Khaleed, adding: “We want to thank the members of the public who stopped to try and help Khaleed and the ambulance service and hospital staff who did all they could to try and save him.
“We are also really grateful to the police for their efforts in the investigation so far to ensure the person responsible is brought to justice. We are struggling to understand why anyone would do this. We know getting justice for Khaleed will not bring him back but we will make sure that he gets the justice he deserves.”
De Montfort University also confirmed one of their students had died, in a statement shared on Wednesday. Professor Normington said: “We are devastated by the tragic death of one of our students. Our thoughts are with everyone who is affected by what has happened. We are offering direct support to students, staff and the family of the victim.
“We are working with Leicestershire Police as they investigate this tragic incident. Thank you for the messages of support we have been receiving from the community of Leicester: it is a city that knows how to stand together in moments like this.”
