Nestlé has updated its voluntary recall of several baby formula products, as they may contain a harmful toxin
Nestlé has expanded its recall of numerous baby formula products amid fears they may contain a dangerous toxin. The voluntary recall of various SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula products was announced by the manufacturer in January, over worries about the “possible presence” of cereulide in its range.
In its statement, Nestlé emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of babies remains its “absolute priority”. The product recall is being carried out as a precautionary step, with the company voluntarily withdrawing specific batches due to the potential presence of cereulide in the products, reports the Express.
Nestlé confirmed that no verified reports of any illness linked to the consumption of the affected products have been received.
The Food Standards Agency’s risk statement explained: “Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus.
“Cereulide is highly heat stable meaning it is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by cooking, using boiling water or when making the infant milk. If consumed it can lead to rapid onset of symptoms.
“Symptoms caused by this toxin include nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps. Even if you have not identified ill health in your baby as a result of consumption of this product, it is essential to stop using it.
“If the infant formula or follow-on formula was prescribed by a health professional for your infant, consult a pharmacist or other medical professional before changing formula.”
The FSA has also issued a correction to one of its previous alerts which contained an inaccuracy in the product name. The agency clarified: “The correct product name is SMA First Infant Milk. It has a pack size of 800g, batch code 53390346AB and best before December 2027. This product is only sold in Northern Ireland.”
Parents who may have purchased any of the affected batches are being strongly advised not to feed them to their baby. Those who have bought one of these batches should submit a photograph of the product and batch code via https://www.nestle.co.uk/en-gb/getintouch or contact the careline on 0800 0 81 81 80 to arrange a refund.

Parents who have been prescribed any of these batches are being instructed to “destroy” the product and consult their healthcare professional for guidance on suitable alternatives.
Any concerns regarding a baby’s wellbeing should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Nestlé clarified in a statement: “All other Nestlé products and other batches of the same product that are not in the scope of this voluntary recall are safe to consume.”
