Everything you need to know about the Great Ormond Street surgeon who ‘harmed’ 94 kids – The Mirror

Need to know

A shocking report found a surgeon at a major UK children’s hospital ‘harmed’ children through ‘poor planning before surgery’ and ‘putting implants in the wrong place’

Ten things you need to know about surgeon Yaser Jabbar who ‘harmed’ nearly 100 children in his care:

  1. Yaser Jabbar’s actions led to 94 children being “harmed” while they were in his care, a report released yesterday concluded.
  2. Jabbar treated hundreds of children at Great Ormond Street Hospital from 2017 to 2022, with around 36 kids suffering severe harm. A further 39 patients came to moderate harm and 19 patients came to mild harm.
  3. The surgeon worked on lower limb reconstruction and most of the impacted kids – 91 – were people he had performed surgery on.
  4. The report said: “There were some serious problems found, including poor planning before surgery, not making the area stable enough, unclear or incomplete notes, and putting implants in the wrong place.”
  5. The British consultant surgeon was trained at a medical school in the UK and worked his way up to become a consultant in 2014.
  6. Concerns were raised to the hospital about Jabbar and when GOSH looked back at his work it found seven complaints and one serious incident during this time.
  7. The report said the serious incident was “closed” in 2021 and “did not trigger any further exploration of any possible issue with Mr Jabbar’s practice”.
  8. Concerns were raised in 2022 and later that year a formal review by the Royal College of Surgeons was commissioned. Jabbar started an unpaid sabbatical from work in October 2022 and formally reigned in June 2023.
  9. Jabbar has not had a licence to practise medicine in the UK since January 2024 and is reported to have moved overseas.
  10. Matthew Shaw, chief executive of Gosh said in a statement: “We are profoundly sorry to all the patients and their families who have been affected by the care provided by Mr Jabbar.”
