A travel duo named Chelsea Dickenson and James Robinson was baffled when they came across the ‘most overpriced’ McDonalds in the world, as they couldn’t believe the cost of a Big Mac
If you’re ever travelling somewhere, whether it’s going on a road trip or flying to a different country, something you can almost always guarantee is that there will be a McDonalds somewhere on your route. Because of the cheap food that’s ready within minutes of ordering, many will often opt for this when hunger strikes while travelling.
However, one travelling duo now claims it’s not always worth visiting, after coming across what has been considered one of the most overpriced Maccies in the world. While Chelsea Dickenson is known for having the best tips and tricks for travelling as cheaply as possible, having made a name for herself as ‘HolidayExpert’, even she was intrigued by the prices of this expensive McDonalds when she came across it.
Travelling with podcast co-host and friend James Robinson, who is also the regional managed for Chelsea’s Holiday Expert brand, the travel duo did not know what to expect as they arrived at the McDonalds.
“We are at what is considered as one of the most overpriced McDonalds in the world. It’s in Antalya Airport, and we’ve heard it costs an absolute fortune. But it can’t be real,” she said sceptically.
As they walked up to the screen to place their order, they said that the prices would be in Turkish lira, so they would be converting the price into British pounds to see just how expensive their meal would be.
The first thing they did was tap on the Big Mac option to see how much a medium-sized meal would cost. This burger is one of the fast food chains most popular meals, with a burger in the UK often costing around £4.89, or around £7.50 if you turn it into a meal with chips and a drink. However, these prices varies between each McDonalds restaurant.
So the travelling duo was left gobsmacked when they realised the same meal costing 887 Turkish lira, which is about £15.34, according to their calculations.
They then went on to check what a standard Happy Meal would cost, as this popular children’s meal consisting of a main, side, drink, and a toy, usually costs between £3.49 and £4.49 in the UK, depending on the main item chosen and where you got it. This ended up costing 665 Turkish lira, which they were just as baffled to learn was the equivalent of £11.50. However, curiosity got the better of them, as James went on to pay the £11 to try a Turkish Happy Meal.
“I wanted to see what the toy was,” James said, before the video cut to him with the meal as he revealed he’d gotten a Playmobile llama that he got to build.
“That’s what you paid £11.50 for,” Chelsea said as James showed off the finished llama toy.
They then went on to try the food, starting with the chips which they said tasted just like any other McDonalds chips. As for the burger, they went on to say that it didn’t taste as well as you’d want for having paid £11.50 for the meal.
Clearly unimpressed by the meal, Chelsea urging other travellers: “Make sure you eat before you come to Antalya Airport.”
Chelsea and James weren’t the only ones baffled by the price, as several viewers soon took to the comment section to share their own thoughts.
“Ahaha the most traumatic place on earth,” one person said, while a second user commented: “No thank you! I’m far too tight! Lol.”
“At least the llama is cute. Nice souvenir!” someone else said.
