A woman in her 40s has tragically died following a suspected assault in North Shields on Saturday evening – a teenage male and a woman in her 50s have been arrested as part of a police probe
A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman died following a suspected assault.
Emergency services rushed to Russell Street in North Shields, North Tyneside, shortly after 10pm yesterday following reports of concern for the welfare of a woman. The victim, who was in her 40s, is believed to have sustained a serious injury during an altercation. She was taken to hospital in a critical condition but sadly died a short time later. Her next of kin have been informed and are currently being supported by specialist officers.
A man in his teens has since been arrested on suspicion of murder, while a woman in her 50s has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, Northumbria Police said. Both remain in police custody at this time.
A police cordon remained in place outside Charlie’s Bar in North Shields on Sunday afternoon, ChronicleLive reports. The venue announced it would remain closed today.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton, of the force’s major investigation team, said: “Firstly, our thoughts remain firmly with the family and loved ones of the woman who has died.
“We will continue to provide them with any support they need following this tragic incident. An investigation has now been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the woman’s death.
“A cordon is in place, and officers remain at the scene – I would encourage anyone with concerns to speak to them. If you have any information, no matter how insignificant you think it may be, please get in touch.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to urge people to refrain from sharing speculation on social media which could jeopardise our active enquiries.”
Charlie’s Bar said in an online statement: “We are deeply saddened at the devastating news of last night’s incident, and send our deepest condolences to family and friends, we are cooperating with police in everything we can to help this investigation and would appreciate if people showed some consideration towards the family with their comments.”
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said emergency crews were called shortly before 10pm. A double-crewed ambulance attended, supported by Great North Air Ambulance’s medical car.
