One supermarket has been crowned the best value with over 1,600 shoppers voting on grocery prices and quality.
Shoppers have crowned the UK’s top value supermarket, with Lidl missing out on the coveted prize. Most of us are keen to stretch our budgets during the weekly food shop, making it crucial to feel we’re securing proper bang for our buck.
The yearly Good Housekeeping Food Awards have made their comeback for 2026, with more than 1,600 readers casting their ballots for the champions. They weighed in on categories spanning from ‘best in-store experience’ through to ‘best fresh produce’ and ‘best to impress guests’.
Among the most significant accolades was their Best Value Supermarket prize.
The honour went to Aldi, with shoppers applauding the retailer for its pocket-friendly prices and extensive product selection. Aldi pipped Lidl to first place, though this isn’t their inaugural face-off.
The rival discount chains regularly clash thanks to their budget-friendly pricing strategies. Yet voters didn’t award Lidl the silver medal, instead handing the runner-up spot to Sainsbury’s, reports the Express.
One customer declared: “Aldi is my go-to for an affordable weekly shop.” Another commented: “They don’t do meal deals – they just sell good products at great prices.”
Aldi also secured the Favourite Supermarket crown in the 2026 awards. Once more, customers lauded its competitive pricing and product standards as the deciding factors behind its triumph.
A satisfied shopper justified their choice: “I find Aldi really convenient to shop, and the staff are always super friendly.”
Sainsbury’s claimed the runner-up position for this category as well. Regarding Favourite Premium Supermarket Range, customers crowned Marks & Spencer’s Our Best Ever as the winner.
When seeking something extraordinary and a delightful indulgence, numerous shoppers revealed they turn to the M&S luxury collection.
“M&S is my go-to for luxury items, including flowers and sweet treats,” one declared. Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference range secured second place in the category.
Aldi also triumphed in the Which? cheapest supermarket for 2025 study. The consumer organisation tracked grocery prices across Britain’s major supermarket chains daily throughout the previous year.
Their findings revealed Aldi claimed the title of most affordable supermarket for 10 out of 12 months annually. During the two months they fell short, Lidl secured the cheapest position.
The two retailers remain neck and neck, with Lidl charging just 77p more than Aldi on average monthly.
