Locals have expressed their concerns over the incident

An “unexploded bomb” has been allegedly handed into police in Merseyside.

Merseyside Police said that, at around 2.40pm today, a member of the public turned up at Wallasey Police Station with a suspected WWII bomb. Manor Road has been closed as a precaution while the device is further examined.

The police station has remained open, but nearby Monkey House Children’s play centre appears to be closed. One man told the Liverpool Echo: “I live right next to the police station and if anything happens my house would be the first to go up. I hope they know what they’re doing.”

Another resident, who lives just outside the cordon, said: “I know someone who lives on Wimbledon (Street) and apparently police have told them not to leave their houses.” She added: “It’s a bit unsettling to be honest. I’m surprised no one has been evacuated if there’s an unexploded bomb right next door.”

Referencing another unexploded bomb found in Wirral, another local said: “This seems like it’s happening all the time now. Only last week there was a bomb found on Argyle Street in Birkenhead. It just makes you wonder how many are actually out there.” They added: “It is concerning, especially being so close to a school.”
