Cadbury Mini Eggs have been around since 1967, but one UK food shopper was left baffled after spotting the latest price of a bag of the chocolate treat on the supermarket shelves
A shopper was left gobsmacked after spotting the price of a bag of Cadbury mini eggs on a recent shopping trip to Tesco, and people couldn’t believe their eyes.
For many shoppers, spotting Cadbury Mini Eggs on supermarket shelves signals that Christmas has passed and Easter is on the horizon. First launched by Cadbury in 1967, these beloved treats consist of solid milk chocolate covered in a thin, hard candy shell, moulded to look like miniature eggs. Over the years, the brand has expanded the range with special editions and flavours, including Mini Egg Easter eggs and Mini Egg cookies.
However, numerous shoppers have been left fuming after discovering the famous chocolate treats back in stores. The controversy isn’t about them appearing too early, but rather their eye-watering price.
Among those stunned was Welsh bikini competitor Nickie Noo Murtagh, who shared a clip from her Tesco shopping trip on TikTok. She’d planned to treat herself to a packet of Cadbury Mini Eggs before returning to her diet, but the cost made her reconsider.
“Six whole British pounds and twenty pence for this bag of mini eggs,” she announced in the video, displaying a 256g family pack of Cadbury Mini Eggs to her followers.
“I was willing to overlook the fact that Easter Eggs were out on Jan 1st for a cheeky bag of Mini Eggs while I’m still technically still allowed a treat,” she wrote in the caption. “But then I saw the price tag! No way am I paying £6.20 for a bag … WTF is this price?? Used to be a £1 right??” Nickie wasn’t alone in her bewilderment at the price, as the comment section quickly filled with people voicing their opinions.
“What in the world!!! I love a mini egg but not for that price…,” one person commented, whilst another said: “Least it’ll stop me buying & eating them.”
A third user added: “Wow that’s ridiculous!”, with numerous others describing the price as ‘insane’.
When approached for comment regarding its pricing, Tesco clarified that a 256g pack of Mini Eggs is currently available on Clubcard offer for £5.40, noting that it’s competitively priced in comparison to the same product at rival retailers.
Why are mini eggs so expensive?
The price of mini eggs has increased due to cocoa prices reaching an all-time high. The Office for National Statistics, the UK’s national body for facts and figures, reports that chocolate prices have surged by over 17% in the year to October 2025.
This stems from a global supply shortage triggered by poor harvests in West Africa.
The UK obtains the majority of its cocoa beans from the Ivory Coast and Ghana, where extreme weather events (including the 2023 El Niño phenomenon, droughts, and excessive rainfall) and the spread of crop diseases like the Cacao Swollen Shoot Virus (CSSV) have devastated harvests. As a result of this, combined with the climate crisis which has also impacted cocoa crops, worldwide cocoa production has declined by more than 14%.
Reacting to the soaring costs of ingredients, UK chocolate makers including Cadbury and Mars Wrigley have resorted to hiking up product prices and shrinking product sizes, a practice commonly known as ‘shrinkflation’.
