The two-year-old boy, from London, died after a broken down car he was in was struck on the A1 in Cambridgeshire

A toddler has tragically died in a crash on the A1 just days before Christmas.

The two-year-old boy, from London, was in a Toyota Auris that had broken down in a live lane on the northbound carriageway in Cambridgeshire when it was hit by a Volkswagen Touran at around 6.20pm on Saturday, just past Stibbington Junction.

Five other passengers in the Toyota were seriously injured and taken to Peterborough City Hospital. The 64-year-old driver of the Volkswagen, from Peterborough, suffered minor injuries. He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail until March 20.

Sgt David McIlwhan said: “Our thoughts are with the parents and family of this young child who has tragically lost his life in this collision. The family is being supported by specialist family liaison officers. I would appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage but was unable to stop at the scene, to get in touch.”

Police are now asking for any witnesses or those with dashcam footage to come forward.

Anyone with information about the moments leading up to the incident or the collision should report it to the police online quoting incident 401 of December 20, or call 101.
