Building society customers who received cheques have until January 1, 2026 to pay them in as part of ‘The Big Nationwide Thank You’
Customers of a major building society have only a few days left to cash in a £50 ‘thank you’ voucher. The building society announced earlier this year that it would be rewarding customers with cash payments following the successful acquisition of Virgin Money.
Approximately 12 million customers were eligible for the £50 payments as part of what was termed “The Big Nationwide Thank You”. Payments started to appear in bank accounts from April 9, but some customers received a cheque in the post from May 14.
These cheques must be cashed by January 1, 2026 to ensure you don’t miss out on the payment. In total, Nationwide’s thank-you payments amounted to more than £600 million.
Customers are only eligible for the £50 payment if they were a Nationwide member on September 30, 2024 – and continue to be. To qualify for the £50 bonus, Nationwide members must have met at least one of the following criteria in the 12 months leading up to the end of September 2024: Made at least one qualifying transaction on a current account or savings account; Held at least £100 in total across one or more current and savings accounts; Owed at least £100 on a Nationwide residential mortgage.

This £50 payment is different from Nationwide’s “Fairer Share” payment, which has been issued three times since 2023. Each year, the payment has been worth £100.
How did members qualify for the payment?
The person must have been a Nationwide member on 30 September 2024. And still have been a member when we made the payment.
In the 12 months to the end of September 2024, members must also have:
- had at least one qualifying transaction on your Nationwide current account or savings account, or
- had at least £100 in total in one or more of your Nationwide current accounts and savings accounts, or
- owed at least £100 in total on one or more Nationwide residential mortgages.
The person also met the requirements if you completed a switch to any Nationwide current account. They just had to do so between 1 July 2024 and 30 September 2024 using the Current Account Switch Service.
For full details, including any exclusions that might apply, read the terms and conditions.
How did the £50 get paid?
Payments have been made into either a current account, an instant access or a limited access savings account in your name.
If you have a mortgage with us, we have paid £50 into the bank account used for your mortgage Direct Debit, as long as the account is in your name.
All other payments have been made by cheque. Cheques must be paid in by 1 January 2026 to make sure you don’t miss out on the payment.
