A taxpayer asked for help as they wanted to claim back some cash
HMRC has outlined its rules for securing a tax refund payment. The department issued guidance to clarify the procedures after an enquiry from a taxpayer. The taxpayer approached the authority as they were preparing to write to HMRC to request a cash refund.
They asked the group which address to use for their correspondence. HMRC initially responded with details of two postal addresses the person might consider using. The second address was specifically for correspondence “originating from outside UK”.
The taxpayer then provided further details about their circumstances. They told the department: “I stopped being a tax resident of the UK in October of 2023 and had a tax return for the fiscal year 2023/2024.
“I want to write a letter to HMRC from abroad to authorize HMRC to send the refund cheque to my nominee. Please confirm the correct postal address?”
HMRC confirmed the person should use the second address they had provided.

The details to include in the letter
HMRC also shared some advice on what details you should include in your letter. The group told the taxpayer: “You must write to us with your nominee details in order for us to be able to deal with your repayment claim once we have received it.
“You will need to include your National Insurance Number, name, address, signature and the date your repayment amount and the year the repayment is for. You will also need to write to us with the name and address of the nominee to receive the replacement cheque.”
