In the past, you wouldn’t have expected to pay more than a fiver for a tin of festive chocolates. However, I had to do a double-take when I saw how much Cadbury Roses and Heroes were on sale in my latest trip to the supermarket
It’s that time of year where most of us treat ourselves to a tin of chocolate for the living room to give out to friends, family and visitors or just to indulge in personally. However, if you’re planning to do that, you may want to save up.
In the past, you wouldn’t have expected to pay more than a fiver for a tin of festive chocolates. However, I had to do a double-take when I saw how much Cadbury Roses and Heroes were on sale in my latest trip to the supermarket. Heading to my local Sainsbury’s I thought I might buy myself a tin of choccies as I fancied munching on some while watching the next Christmas film on my list.
However, I was horrified to discover both 700g tins of Cadbury Roses and Heroes were on sale for £16.50.
The only saving grace is that you can get the tins of chocolate for £10 if you have a Nectar card, however that’s still quite steep in my book.
Luckily, there are some cheaper options for Sainsbury’s shoppers when it comes to chocolate Christmas tins.
The website states that Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate Mixed Chunks Tin (60g) is £9.59 or £6.50 with a Nectar card. Meanwhile, a 750g tin of Quality Street are £13 or £8.50 with Nectar.
You can also buy a 500-550g of Celebrations, Heroes and Quality Street for just £6 a tub.
Those who really want a deal may want to head to Tesco though, as the same 500-550g Celebrations and Quality Street tubs are just £3.95 at Tesco at the moment with a Clubcard, and £4.50 normally.
Meanwhile, the £16.50/£10 tub of Heroes in Sainsbury’s is also only £7.50 with a Clubcard in Tesco, however it is £15 normally.
The sighting comes after the cheapest supermarkets for Christmas chocolate tubs was recently revealed.
It found that standard tubs of Heroes, Roses and Celebrations were all under £5 at Asda currently, while Morrisons are selling them for £7 (or £5.50 with a Morrisons More Card).
As listed above, Celebrations and Quality street are just £3.95 with a Clubcard at Tesco, while Roses and Heroes are £7 (or £5.25 with a Clubcard). Meanwhile Aldi and Lidl are both selling tubs for under £5 too.
Neither Marks and Spencer nor Waitrose stock the traditional tubs on their websites, though both retailers offer smaller pouch-sized packets and alternative festive chocolates – priced between approximately £4 and £10.
