Morrisons is set to slow down the checkout process at some of its tills, introducing Talking Tills at stores across the country. The supermarket will offer customers the opportunity to spend more time at the checkout, from Thursday, 4 December to Sunday, 7 December.

The initiative aims to provide a slower-paced checkout experience and the chance for customers to engage in friendly conversation. This move comes as part of Morrisons’ collaboration with the 1 Million Minutes campaign, which encourages people to donate their time to help combat loneliness.

David Scott, Corporate Affairs Director at Morrisons, said: “At Morrisons, supporting the communities we serve is at the heart of what we do. We know that for many people, especially at this time of year, a simple conversation can make a real difference. The Talking Tills campaign is designed to create space for those meaningful moments, offering customers the chance to slow down and chat if they’d like to.”

Daniel Robinson, Editor of Good Morning Britain, said: “In the 10 years since we launched our 1 Million Minutes campaign, we have brought together thousands of volunteers with thousands of people experiencing loneliness and isolation around the UK. And this year feels more urgent than ever, with rising prices in the shops and pressure on families, it’s so easy to feel disconnected.

“We all know what it feels like to feel lonely. And whether it’s a family member, a friend, a neighbour or a stranger, pledging just a few minutes of time can really make a difference. Our viewers have been immensely generous with their time over the years and I know this December is going to be something really special.”

The campaign forms part of Morrisons’ wider efforts to combat loneliness through partnerships with charities this festive season, which includes a £50,000 contribution from the Morrisons Foundation to support 100 festive gatherings organised by Royal Voluntary Service, as well as providing 400 complimentary Christmas dinners in Morrisons cafés working alongside Age UK. Additionally, the supermarket’s Community Champions based in stores will be giving thousands of Morrisons products to local Christmas events that help isolated people in their areas.
