People are fuming about the cost of a 700g tin of chocolates, and it sparked a big debate about the price of the Christmas sweets from other retailers, and whether to get a tub or tin
Festive treats are among the highlights of the Christmas season. Everybody enjoys those little tubs of chocolates you can nibble on whenever you fancy. But before long, the entire box has vanished well ahead of December 25, meaning you have to go back out shopping.
So there’s just one answer – you’ll need to head out and purchase more. In years gone by, that hasn’t been such a major issue. However, when one bloke nipped into his neighbourhood Aldi shop, he was stunned by what they were charging for a 700g tub of Heroes. Across the top of the clip, @maneatsthingz posted: “Am I tripping or does that say £11.99 for 700g of Heroes?”
He went on: “This can’t be right, I thought these were like £5 a tin or something. Someone tell me this is nuts, please.”
To hammer home his argument even more, the footage featured ‘Bonkers’ by Dizzee Rascal playing because he was absolutely gobsmacked at the eye-watering cost they were demanding.
In the replies, shoppers were just as unimpressed by the pricing. One person commented: “I’m not buying them. I never do since they made the tubes smaller and more expensive.”
Another raged: “Cadbury’s are taking the peach out of us! Their version of inflation has been a disgrace over the last few years.” And somebody else fumed: “Cheap chocolate at silly prices.”
Tins at Aldi are priced at £11.99, while they’re more expensive at Tesco at £15, reduced to £10 with a Clubcard, Sainsbury’s at £16.50, down to £14.50 with a Nectar card, and Morrisons at £16.50. The 550g tubs are also available at Aldi for £4.89, which undercuts other supermarkets.
Because of this, many shoppers are switching to supermarket own-brand alternatives. One person revealed they purchased an option at M&S they were looking forward to sampling.
They wrote: “£12 for a 1.2kg tin at M&S. That’s what I got this year. Looking forward to trying them. And it has coffee creams!”
Another shopper also encouraged others to consider own-brand products, responding: “£3.95 in Tesco for a 550g tub. Great value. Oh well, people won’t be happy it didn’t say Christmas Quality Street tub. Wake up.”
Yet some stood by the Tesco options. It’s worth noting these are the tins, not tubs, which appear far more presentable.
Customers have suggested they’re “easier to store” in their cupboards than the circular plastic alternatives, which will require recycling rather than being reused for something else after Christmas has passed.
A 550g tub of Heroes from Cadbury’s costs £8.99. Alternatively, in Tesco, they’re typically £7, but only £5.25 with a Clubcard.
Therefore, it comes down to whether you’re concerned about the additional 150g of chocolate and the more attractive tin when deciding on the 700g option. On the Cadbury’s website, a tin will cost you a hefty £17, so if you’re keen on getting one, it’s likely best to pop into Aldi and pay £11.99 instead of buying it online with additional postage costs.
Cadbury’s has been approached for a comment regarding the prices.
