Father-of-three Lee Claydon, 45, died after falling from Wembley Stadium’s upper-tier towards the end of Oasis’ reunion concert in London on August 2
An inquest into the death of an Oasis fan who plummeted to his death at Wembley Stadium heard today that the police investigation is “complete”.
Lee Claydon died on August 2 after suffering what police described as “injuries consistent with a fall”. Reports at the time said the landscape gardener, from Bournemouth, Dorset, fell from the stadium’s upper tier as the sell-out concert was coming to a close.
The father-of-three attended one the rock band’s sell-out Live ’25 reunion tour shows, their first since splitting in 2009. He went alongside his brother Aaron, and his niece and nephew, but the evening ended in tragedy after the 45-year-old fell.
Barnet Coroner’s Court heard on Wednesday that the police have completed their investigation into Mr Claydon’s death. Detective Sergeant James Raffin, from the Met Police, told the hearing: “From a police point of view, this is no longer a criminal prosecution.
“We do not suspect any third party involvement. This, from everything we have seen, was a tragic accident. From a police point of view, I would say our investigation is complete.”
DS Raffin said he had seen a toxicology report and said there were “no concerns there”. He told the hearing that Mr Claydon had drunk alcohol, but said this was “expected” and “normal for any of the people attending”.
The officer said he was aware the family had concerns over the “circumstances on the night”, and said he would pass these on to officials at Brent Council.
He said the force have ruled out the possibility of a suicide and will hand their report over to the local authority, who will now review the documents. Senior Coroner Andrew Walker said the full inquest will take place on February 26 next year.
Oasis said in a statement the next day that they were “shocked and saddened” to hear of the death. The band added: “Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved.”
An inquest into his death was originally opened at Barnet Coroner’s Court on September 10 by senior coroner Andrew Walker. It heard Mr Claydon was taken to a medical centre in Wembley after the fall where he was pronounced dead at 10.38pm.
Mr Walker said a post-mortem examination on August 6 gave the preliminary medical cause of death as “multiple bodily injuries”. Detective Inspector Aimee-Leigh Sando said police could not “give a timeframe” on when the investigation into Mr Claydon’s death will be completed.
Ms Sando said: “We are reviewing all evidence including CCTV footage and surrounding evidence. We are looking to complete statements from significant witnesses of those present during the fall. A substantial amount of personnel came forward after we put out the media request.”
Mr Claydon’s dad Clive previously claimed his son fell to his death after slipping on beer – but insisted he was “not drunk”. He said: “There was beer all over the floor, it was really slippery, and Lee just slipped and fell. I’ve been told that it was an accident waiting to happen. It was a horrible, horrible accident.
“All I really know is there was beer everywhere, he slipped, and we don’t know the rest of it. He has never taken drugs in his life and he may have had a beer, who doesn’t at a concert, but he certainly was not drunk.”
In an emotional tribute posted on social media in the days after he died, his girlfriend Amanda said: “I don’t have many words right now… but it’s just not fair, and it’s not right that you’re not here with us. But I will never stop loving you! My best friend, my soulmate, and the other half (the sensible and smarter half!) of our one brain.
“You were the best person to be around, day or night. We went through some tough times, but they only made us stronger. I’m so grateful for the time we had together, even though this cruel world cut it way too short. We had so much to look forward to.”
