Although there are no specific trading laws around bank holidays, many retailers, businesses, and supermarkets adjust their hours slightly to give their staff a little break on the day
Tesco will be changing its opening times slightly this weekend due to the Early May bank holiday. There are two bank holidays in Ma, one at the beginning and one at the end.
This year’s Early May bank holiday is Monday, May 5, and the Spring bank holiday is Monday, May 26. Although there are no specific trading laws around bank holidays, many retailers, businesses, and supermarkets adjust their hours slightly to give their staff a little break on the day.
This will be the case with Tesco which will be adjusting the opening hours of their larger sites on the Early May bank holiday. The majority of Tesco’s larger supermarket stores will be open as normal over the bank holiday weekend.
On Friday and Saturday – so May 2 and 3 – stores will open at either 6am or 7am, and close as late as midnight.
On Sunday, most larger stores are open from 10am or 11am, until 4pm or 5pm as they have to follow Sunday trading laws. Stores in Scotland are open for much longer hours, as trading rules are different in Scotland.
On the bank holiday Monday itself – so on May 5 – the larger Tesco stores in England and Wales will be opening at around 8am and will be closing at 6pm. In Scotland, the majority will be closing a little later at 8pm

Tesco also has its smaller convenience stores too, and these typically open at 6am and close between 11pm and midnight. Over the bank holiday weekend, including the bank holiday Monday.
Tesco also offers same-day delivery service called Whoosh and according to Tesco’s website, Whoosh hours vary during publib and bank holidays. This is because some stores may be closed or have reduced hours during this time.
Tesco’s website says: “We’ll select the most appropriate store to fulfil your order, based on current capacity. The range of products you can shop from may vary, depending on where your order is being picked from.”
Opening hours may differ from store to store, so it is best to check your local Tesco opening times by using its online store locator tool. This is also the best place to check for Petrol Filling Station opening times, as these can vary from the main store’s opening hours.
