Police are urging witnesses to come forward after two women were allegedly sexually assaulted by a man inside Dover Castle’s wartime tunnels.
Kent Police said it received a report that two women were sexually assaulted at the site at around 1:30pm on Sunday, April 6. The suspect was described as being a white male in his 40s, who was dressed in a black or grey tracksuit at the time of the incident. The force said in a statement: “Witnesses are sought following a sexual assault at Dover Castle. It was reported that at around 1.30pm on Sunday 6 April 2025 two women were sexually assaulted by a man in the wartime tunnels. The suspect is described as a white man in his 40s wearing a black or grey tracksuit.
“Officers have carried out a number of enquiries, including reviewing CCTV footage. Investigators are now appealing for witnesses who have not yet spoken to the police.”
The medieval castle, which attracts more than 300,000 visitors and per year, is among the most popular sites managed by English Heritage and has a lengthy history as a strategic defensive site.
In 1940, its wartime tunnels became the command center for Operation Dynamo – the evacuation of British and Allied soldiers from Dunkirk.
The tunnels were fully functional headquarters with communication rooms, sleeping quarters, deep underground military hospitals and planning areas.
Today, visitors can take guided or self-led tours through various tunnel levels, including those themed around WWII and the Cold War.
Sound and light effects are used to recreate the tense atmosphere of the wartime command centre.
Dover Castle also features a Roman lighthouse, a Saxon church, a Norman keep and medieval concentric defenses, all within an 80-acre site.
It’s one of the largest castles in the country and has served as a defensive stronghold for centuries, overlooking the English Channel.
