Several products from the Coca-Cola company are subject to recalls amid concerns they have a higher level of chlorate than they should – check below to see the affected items
Coca-Cola has issued an urgent UK recall amid concerns the contents of some cans could make consumers unwell.
The recall relates to a small number of imported cans of Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke and Spirit Zero as they may contain higher levels of chlorate. The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) said in a statement: “Long term consumption of chlorate can lead to the inhibition of iodine uptake, this could potentially cause adverse health effects such as goitre. A single high intake of chlorate, (as an acute exposure), could limit the body’s ability to absorb oxygen from the blood, and could in severe cases lead to kidney failure.”
Other affected products include two imported batches of 6x250ml Appletiser multipacs. The company said the products could pose a risk to customers, in particular those who are sensitive to chlorate or live with an iodine deficiency.
Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) said standard dimension cans, all glass and plastic bottles in the UK are not impacted. It said only production codes from 328 GE to 338 GE are included in the product recall.

This comes after Tesco issued an urgent recall of Free From meals after it was discovered the kits failed to declare a key ingredient. The Foods Standards Agency (FSA) revealed this week that “undeclared soya” in the products created a “possible health risk” for tens of thousands of people, especially children.
The FSA said in a statement on Tuesday that the soya content is not mentioned on two Free From meal boxes, the Tesco Free From Katsu Curry and Tesco Free From Sweet & Sour Meal Kits.
Tesco’s recall notice is an allergy alert that has warned people who ate the meal kits to contact health support organisations, with the ingredient omission potentially proving deadly for those with soya allergies. People who suffer from the allergy can experience severe adverse reactions, including diarrhoea, vomiting and anaphylaxis, which is potentially deadly if left untreated.
Tesco customers have been ordered to immediately return the products with specific best by dates. The FSA said: “Tesco is recalling the above products from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall. The company has also issued a recall notice to its customers.”
