People are shocked at the price of a childhood favourite bargain chocolate bar that many would pick up on the way home from school and have blamed inflation for the increased cost
People are gobsmacked after learning how much a formerly bargain chocolate bar costs today.
Euro Shopper’s milk chocolate bar is now £1.15 but many shoppers remember it being 50p. As Euro Shopper is a discount brand with a range of everyday food and drink items, people associate it with bargain buys.
However, it seems that this is no longer the case for the popular chocolate bar. A user on X posted a photo of the treat with the caption “the game has well and truly gone”, expressing their disappointment.
This resonated with others as the tweet has amassed 3.6 million views, 22,000 likes and 248 comments in three days. One person familiar with the chocolate said: “50p Euro Shopper held the streets down for years.”
Another added: “Could get 2 of them back in the day for less than that price. Game’s well and truly gone.” A third X user shared: “Saw this for the first time yesterday. 50p each when I was in school.”
A fourth chimed in: “I used to get these after school for 50p back in 2016. It’s so over.” Others left comments with their memories of the cheap chocolate, including “that used to be my emergency 50p chocolate”, “remember getting these from the corner shop for 50p” and “I remember buying 1 of these bad boys and an orange isotonic drink and still having 5p change from a £1.”
A different user reminisced about the snacks they would buy while they were at school: “Waging it down the school drive going to Tesco with £2, getting one of these for 50p, happy shopper orange sport drink for 50p and 2x scotch eggs for 89p. That fuelled me as a teen.”
Instagram page Great British Memes also shared a post about the cost of the Euro Shopper milk chocolate bar with pictures of it when it was 50p then 85p when it increased from 90g to 100g and now £1.15 for the same size bar. This chocolate bar was seen as a cheaper alternative to bigger brands like Cadbury and Galaxy.
Many adults who grew up in the 00’s remember picking one up from the corner shop on the way home from school for 50p. They would make use of spare change their parents’ had lying around to buy some after school snacks for less than a pound.
But these days are long gone as it’s now a struggle to find a 90g or 100g chocolate bar for as little as 50p. Many people have blamed inflation for the “disgusting” price hike of the Euro Shopper bar.
Users on X remarked “this is insane inflation”, “real sign of inflation” and “inflation is mental.” Some pointed out that the Euro Shopper bar is now only 20p less than the Cadbury Dairy Milk so you “can’t even call them cheap anymore.”
