A weather warning for snow and ice has been issued by the Met Office today as temperatures are set to feel like -5C across North Yorkshire and -4C in Cambridgeshire
Brits have today warned to take care on icy surfaces today as they risk “injuries from slips and falls”.
Snow will fall across Scotland and parts of northern England, including Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Cumbria, throughout the day. A yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office, and won’t expire until 2pm, by which time up to 5cm of snow may accumulate.
Referring to the weather warning, the Met Office website reads: “Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces [are likely]. Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths [are likely].”
Disruption is likely throughout the day, particularly across North York Moors and Northumberland. Temperatures are expected to feel like -5C across North Yorkshire due to the blistering easterly wind, which has buffeted the country all week.
It will also feel nearly just as cold in southern parts, including Cambridgeshire. The actual air temperature may be slightly warmer but the easterlies – strongest along the North Sea coast in Lincolnshire – will make it feel colder today.
The Met Office site adds: “Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are likely to develop early Saturday before easing from the west during the afternoon. Snow is more likely to the east of the Pennines, particularly above 150 metres, where 2-5 cm may accumulate over the North York Moors and Northumberland.
“To lower levels, any falling snow may struggle to accumulate though some places may see up to 2 cm before gradually easing during the afternoon. There is also a risk of ice over the Pennines, particularly above 200 metres where freezing rain is possible.”
As surfaces will be icy throughout the day, especially in northern counties, Brits should take to avoid nasty injuries. The hazard will remain on Sunday as temperatures will be similarly bitter, especially across Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.
The snow and ice may threaten Saturday’s sporting schedule with football games planned at Middlesbrough, Hull, Blackburn and Preston. Morecambe are set to host Accrington Stanley in League Two but temperatures are expected to plunge below freezing across Cumbria. There is a jump meeting scheduled at Haydock Park on Saturday too.
