Ex-army man and ‘loving’ father Allen Karam Chand, 82, died after he was attacked and rushed to hospital – a 43-year-old man has since been charged with wounding
A family have paid tribute to their ‘loving and caring’ veteran dad who died after he was attacked at a bus stop.
Allen Karam Chand, who was 82, suffered serious injuries after being attacked in Handsworth around 3.30pm on Tuesday, January 14. He was rushed to hospital, but sadly died the following weekend. A 43-year-old man has since been charged in connection with the incident.
Now, Allen’s family have revealed that the pensioner once served in the army, and had taught his family to “respect the law”. In a statement issued through West Midlands Police, they said: “Our father was loving, caring, and never deceived anyone.
“He taught us to respect the law as an ex-army man and we will always miss him. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
“Jesus said whoever believes in me, though he may die he shall live. Our father is not physically with us but he is alive with Lord Jesus.”
A preliminary post mortem found Mr Chand died as a result of a head injury. A 43-year-old man was charged with wounding on Friday 17 January.
The man appeared at court the next day and was remanded to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 14 February. As a result of Mr Chand’s death, detectives are now reviewing the charge in conjunction with the Crown Prosecution Service.
The statement added: “We still want to hear from anyone with information, particularly any dashcam or mobile phone footage”. Anyone with information has been asked to submit it on the West Midlands Police public portal, call 101, or Live Chat.
“Those who wish to give information anonymously can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
