Temperatures are set to drop in most parts of the country in the first half of January with some regions seeing the mercury drop into the negative double digits
Brits are set to face a chilly start to 2025 with a frosty snap sending temperatures plummeting to -11C.
The country is currently enjoying a mild spell in the run-up to Christmas with the mercury forecast to tip into the negative double digits in December 25. New maps by WXCharts show conditions north of the border will get frosty on January 8.
The map shows the Highlands and the west coast of Scotland will see temperatures drop to a chilly -11C. It is an outlier not only in much of the UK but the rest of Scotland as well.
In southern England, the mercury will hover between -2C to 0C. Heading into the north of England, temperatures will hold to 0C in Yorkshire, while it will drop between -3C and -2C in other regions.
Wales will see highs of 0C along the coast with temperatures dropping to lows of -3C further inland. Northern Ireland escapes the worst of the chill, with the mercury holding firm at 0C.
In Scotland, it will remain between -1C to -4C between the borders and the central belt. Scots living on the east coast can expect temperatures to hover around 0C and 1C.
According to the Met Office, there is a greater chance for colder spells in the first half of January. The long-range forecast for between January 7 and 21 said: “Confidence in this period is fairly low, but overall, slowly-evolving weather patterns are more favoured.
“Continuing from the previous period, there remains a slightly reduced chance compared with normal of wet and windy spells, with a slightly greater potential for colder episodes during the first half of January.
“While drier than average conditions are likely for many areas, some precipitation is still expected, which could lead to wintry hazards at times. Temperatures are likely to be close to or a little above normal overall, but this could be made up of a mix of milder and colder interludes.”
The last days of 2024 will remain mild in contrast to the forecast chill in January. Brits hoping for a chilly Christmas Day with a chance to see the white stuff might end up disappointed with temperatures set to remain mild before the turn of the year.
The Met Office said it will be drier in much of the country with only some isolated showers forecasted in England. Temperatures are due to hit the low double digits in all parts of the UK with some even experiencing highs of 12C.
