Plant experts have shared their top tips to keeping your flowers hydrated at home and explained there is a way to water your plants which will take up less time

Adding to your houseplant collection can be addictive but after a while it can become tough to nurture all of them. However, experts have shared a method that will help you save time when watering your plants.

Whether it is because you are going on a holiday, or you have just bought too many flowers, houseplant experts have insisted that bathing them could be the best option. The trick offers an array of benefits and could be the secret hack that you have been after. Richa Kedia, houseplant expert at Simplify Plants, revealed most plants prefer to be soaked every few weeks rather than frequently and little. She shared her tips on how to give your plants the perfect bath and said there is a particular method you should use.

She said: “To soak a plant, place it in a sink or basin and fill it with water until the soil is submerged. Let the plant sit until the soil is saturated, typically 10-15 minutes, then drain completely before returning it to its usual spot.” The expert advised that if you have a lot of plants that need watering, then filling up a bath might be the best option. “Perform this trick when the soil feels dry to the touch, which could be every 1-2 weeks, depending on the plant and the environment,” she told Livingetc.

According to the expert, plant soaking allows the water to reach the entire root system which offers “deep hydration”. She added: “It can be more effective than regular watering for some plants because it helps prevent dry spots in the soil and ensures that water isn’t just running down the sides of the pot.”

Jack Lewis, CEO and Founder of plant care brand Sowvital, also said that there are benefits to soaking your plants. “I’ve observed that soaking is especially effective for ensuring deep hydration, reaching the roots where it’s needed most,” he said. However, he added that the method only suits some plants. “While soaking houseplants can be beneficial, particularly for those that thrive in more humid conditions, I often lean towards regular watering with a watering can as a more controlled and consistent method,” he added.

“When it comes to soaking, it’s something that should be done with consideration – perhaps once a month or less frequently, depending on the plant’s natural habitat and individual needs. The key, I believe, is to find a balance – using regular watering for plants that are more suited to it, and occasional soaking for plants that need a deeper hydration boost. This combination approach often yields the best results, promoting healthier growth and resilience in plants.”
