Sam Wealleans, aged 29, from Northumberland, passed away after falling ill during the Great North Run where he was raising money on behalf of mental health charity Mind
A young fundraiser who tragically died during this year’s Great North Run has been named.
Sam Wealleans passed away after falling ill during Sunday’s run and was raising money on behalf of mental health charity, Mind. The 29-year-old from Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland was running in memory of his sister, Carly, and a close family friend.
He died in hospital on Sunday after collapsing on the course and it is understood the race was brought to a stop as a result of the tragic incident, which occurred towards the end of the 13.1 mile route. Sam’s family are currently being supported.
A spokesperson for the Great Run Company said “All at the Great Run Company are deeply saddened by Sam’s passing. We are continuing to support Sam’s close family during this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew him. In accordance with the wishes of Sam’s family, no further details will be released, and we ask the media to respect their request for privacy.”
The cause of Sam’s death will be determined following a medical examination. Sunday’s event was the biggest Great North Run yet, with 60,000 participants.
Sam had set up a Great North Run fundraising page with the aim of raising £350. It has since gone on to raise £8,350. A note on the fundraiser said: “I’m running the Great North Run on Sunday the 8th of September 2024 for mental health charity Mind and also in memory of my sister Carly and family friend Matty Wall. Any donations would be greatly appreciated. One in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England. If the money I raise helps just 1 person who’s going through a difficult time and prevents them from taking their own life I’ll be happy!” So far more than £8,700 has been raised for the charity.
The Great North Run on Sunday was brought to a stop, so emergency services could help Sam, towards the end of the 13.1 mile route. The Great North Run, which started in 1981, saw a record number of people take part this year. Celebrities including some of the cast of the Traitors, Dr Alex George, ex-England footballer Steph Houghton and Sara Davies joined the 60,000 runners.
