Authorities in Catalonia are on the hunt after players on a women’s basketball team were allegedly filmed showering before attempting to chase the culprit in their towels
A women’s basketball team in Girona were allegedly surreptitiously filmed while showering together before attempting to hunt down the culprit in nothing but their towels. The suspect responsible for the recording is yet to be found, but could face a potential prison sentence of up to four years, as well as a fine of around £6,000.
The episode unfolded last month in Girona when the senior women’s team of Club Esportiu Bisbal Bàsquet, based in the fourth-tier EBA League, spotted a mobile phone sticking out above the wall to the shower room in their training facility. They quickly gathered their towels in an attempt to track down the alleged offender, who got away and remains unidentified.
Marca reported the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalonia’s police force) are still investigating the matter in an attempt to track down the supposed voyeur. If caught, the culprit faces a prison sentence of up to four years, along with a fine of up to £6,160.
However, these punishments could be considerably worse if the video content is distributed or shared in any way. This includes posting the footage online or selling it for financial gain.
Sara Garcia Carrascosa, a lawyer from Legalitas, clarified that any penalty could be ramped up in that case and explained to La Sexta: “If the video is sold or posted on a page through which an economic return can be obtained, the penalty is even greater.”
A club statement read: “We condemn with total force the acts of intrusion into the privacy of our senior players and express our absolute support for the affected players. We have asked the City Council to take urgent measures to guarantee the safety and dignity of all people in sports facilities.”
In response to the invasion of privacy, Bisbal Basquet requested an emergency meeting with public figures to address the matter. And it’s understood the meeting took place, with mayor Oscar Aparicio, Councillor for Sports Cesc Vidal and Councillor for Equality Dolors Molina each in attendance.
The club has also asked the council to increase security measures at the Bisbal d’Emporda municipal sports pavilion, where the incident took place. This includes the installation of CCTV cameras in the reception area to deter future miscreants from committing similar offences.
Moreover, Bisbal Basquet has requested that opaque panels be installed in the locker room to further protect players. That’s in addition to a request for the wall partitions in the shower area to be raised.
This latest incident materialised mere months after a similar occurrence in Spain involving surreptitious filming in locker rooms. La Sexta reported that in February 2025, a female football monitor was “arrested for recording girls in the bathrooms after training.”
In July 2025, a trainee surgeon named Ryan Cho was arrested in Melbourne and charged after police found “thousands of intimate photos and videos” on his mobile phone. It’s alleged that Cho recorded hundreds of medical colleagues from a hospital toilet before he was caught.
