A woman in her 30s died at a housing estate in Baguley, Greater Manchester, and with a murder probe launched, locals have told how they saw the incident unfold
A woman who died on a housing estate was stabbed and went to a neighbouring property for help, say witnesses.
Emergency services rushed to Lulworth Gardens in Baguley, Greater Manchester, at around 8.30am this morning (January 27) following reports of a disturbance. A woman in her 30s was found unresponsive at the address and officers as well as paramedics attempted CPR, but she was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
A huge cordon was placed around the neighbourhood with a blue tent erected outside a house on the square and a police investigation has now led to the arrest of a 44-year-old man on suspicion of murder who remains in custody.
Shocked locals have told how they witnessed what happened from their own homes at around 8am.
A dad, who was readying his son for school, held back tears as he recounted what he saw. “I was getting my son ready for school and I could see everything from the window,” he told the Manchester Evening News. “She was screaming.”
He added: “She ran to her next door for help, I tried to shout out of my window and then I called the police. It was crazy. I’ve been here for seven years and nothing like that has ever happened, it was out of the blue.”
Described as a relatively “quiet” street, many of those living on Lulworth Gardens said they knew of each other and the victim was described by neighbours as a “lovely person”
Another neighbour said of the victim: “She was one of the loveliest people I’d ever met. She’d always stop for a chat, happy to talk to you, even though she had broken English.
“I know that she was quite friendly with a few people on here and was known to have a chat with them too and gave big hugs. It’s terrible. You see these things on the news and in the paper, but when it happens right at your doorstep, and to someone you know. You understand how devastating it can be.”
A woman, who lives just a few doors down from where the incident occurred, said: “I went to take my kids to school, came back, watched a bit of TV with my headphones in and when I was heading out to meet a friend, I saw all this police and cordons.
“It’s madness. All that happened in around 45 minutes or so. I didn’t hear or see anything, but I’m thinking of that poor person who this has happened to.”
And reacting to the news, a passer-by said: “God bless her. That is awful, I’ll have her in prayers tonight.”
Greater Manchester Police have asked anyone with information which may help their investigation to come forward. Information can also be given anonymously by using the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Superintendent Gayle Brister said: “Whilst the investigation is still in early stages, I want to reassure the public that our officers are working tirelessly and following all lines of enquiry to establish the full circumstances of this tragic incident.
“We understand it may cause concern across our communities, however we believe there is no wider risk to the public. Specialist officers are in place to support the family throughout the investigation.
“We currently have a man in custody and a police cordon remains in place at the scene. I urge anyone with information or any witnesses to please come forward and report.”
