Tania Madley was unable to complete her journey to see her little great-granddaughter as she was knocked down by a driver in Newport, south Wales, and left for dead
A woman was left for dead by a hit-and-run driver on her way to see her baby great-granddaughter for the first time.
Tania Madley was mowed down moments after leaving her home for the momentous journey. The driver opened his door to say: “I’m so sorry, love, I’m sorry” — then he fled the scene in Newport, south Wales.
Paramedics discovered Ms Madley, 60, stricken in the road and treated her for severe bruising. She was lucky to escape without further serious wounds, her family say.
Her daughter Elizabeth-Rose Madley said: “It’s really sad that someone could leave my mother lying in the road after hitting her with their car.
“I’d like to extend my thanks to the two gentlemen from Jones Street who assisted my mother and the young gentleman from the bottom of Graham Street who brought her a chair and a glass of water bless them.”

Ms Madley and her daughter, from Newport, are now urging anyone who may have information to come forward after the driver failed to stop. The victim, who has since been able to meet the new family member, said: “I was walking to visit my eldest granddaughter, she’s just had a baby, so I was going there to see my great-granddaughter.
“She only lives two streets away from me. I was on the road, and I was crossing over, and all of a sudden, I heard the biggest bang. I woke up, I was on my back, and I just opened my eyes. I don’t recall being up in the air or landing, just how loud the bang was.
“I was looking upwards, and I could see the sky looking down at me, and I thought, ‘Oh my God, what was that? What am I doing on the floor?'”
The mum said she saw the black car starting to reverse as she lifted her head up to see what was happening. She said: “I thought he was going to run over me because I was on my back and my legs were in the road.
“I lifted my head up and I could see this car reversing back, and then the driver opened his door and said, ‘I’m so sorry, love, I’m sorry’ then he carried on up the street. I can’t get over the shock of it, and that’s what I keep thinking about — that bang and his face when he’d seen me.” Gwent Police said they are investigating the incident.
It follows the death of a “one in a million” young woman who was run over outside a shopping centre recently. Medics desperately battle to save Natasha Thorp, 21, but she was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands.
