The motorway was shut for hours after officers were called to the M6 in Wigan on Friday and police believe there are no suspicious circumstances around the woman’s death

Police have launched an investigation after a tragic woman died in a tragic incident on the M6, near Wigan.

The motorway was closed for hours earlier today after officers were called to a concern for welfare at the bridge of Downall Green Road, above the southbound stretch this morning. Emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Formal identification is yet to take place, Greater Manchester Police said. There is believed to be no suspicious circumstances around the woman’s death. The M6 reopened at around 4pm this afternoon following the lengthy closure.

A police investigation has been launched. The force are asking for anyone who may have witnessed or been involved in the incident – which took place just before 8am – to contact them.

This includes anyone who witnessed the incident itself, that may have collided with something in the carriageway at this location or has dashcam / CCTV footage of the incident.

The Serious Collision Investigation Unit is now asking for anyone with further information on the fatal collision to come forward.

In the appeal, GMP added: “We would like to thank members of the public today for their patience whilst enquiries have been on-going, we understand this will have caused severe disruption. You can contact the SCIU directly on 0161 856 4741, quoting log 528 of 16/01/2025.

“Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
