An unnamed woman thought to be in her 60s was “pulled from the swimming pool” of a Preston branch of the gym chain following a ‘medical incident’ – and tragically died at the scene

A woman has tragically died after suffering a medical incident at a gym, as paramedics rushed to ‘pull her from a swimming pool’. Police and paramedics were called to Total Fitness on West Strand in Preston, Lancashire, at around 5.30pm on Monday (June 2) following reports of a ‘sudden death’.

The unnamed woman, thought to be in her 60s, was “pulled from the swimming pool” following the medical incident, according to Lancashire Constabulary. Despite the best efforts of emergency workers, she tragically died at the scene, reports LancsLive.

On Tuesday night, the gym remains closed as further investigations were carried out. Police have said that they are not treating the death as suspicious and a file has now been passed to the coroner to establish the woman’s cause of death.

A police spokesperson said: “We were called by the ambulance service at shortly after 5.30pm yesterday (Monday, June 2nd) following a sudden death at Total Fitness, West Strand, Preston.

“A woman, believed to be in her 60s, had been pulled from the swimming pool following a suspected medical episode. Despite the best efforts of staff and medical teams the woman sadly died at the scene.

“Our thoughts are with her loved ones at this time. The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be passed to HM Coroner in due course.”

A spokesperson for Total Fitness told the Mirror: “We are deeply saddened that one of our members has passed away after becoming seriously unwell while at our Preston club on Monday 2 June.

“Our team responded immediately, providing first aid and using a defibrillator. Despite the best efforts of those on site and the emergency services, the member sadly passed away. We are proud of the swift and professional way our team handled such a distressing situation.

“We temporarily closed the club to support those affected and has since reopened. We are continuing to liaise with the relevant authorities and are supporting our team and members affected. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with our members family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.”
