White socks can quickly become stained and dingy if they are not properly cared for, but there is a simple method to make them look whiter and brighter all summer that will not cost you any money at all.
Summer is now just a matter of weeks away, making it the ideal time to shove those chunky jumpers to the back of the wardrobe and dig out your T-shirts, shorts and white socks. White socks are a brilliant choice as temperatures climb, typically being crafted from lighter, more breathable materials that help keep your feet cool and comfortable.
The biggest drawback, however, is that white socks can be a real headache to keep looking fresh, as they seem to pick up stains and appear rather grubby after only a handful of wears. This occurs because body oil and sweat gradually build up within the fabric, and many people make the error of reaching for the bleach.
While bleach is a disinfectant and can brighten clothing, it’s not particularly effective at tackling oily residues and can be quite harsh on fabrics, potentially making stains worse in the long run.
Using bleach too aggressively on light summer items such as white socks can weaken the fabric, leaving them more susceptible to tearing, while stains can become ingrained and lead to unsightly yellowing.
Instead, Marilee Nelson from Branch Basic has revealed a straightforward method to get clothing to its “whitest and brightest” without resorting to bleach — and all you need is natural sunlight.
She explained: “To sun your clothing, sheets, comforters, cloth diapers, etc. simply place them in direct sunlight for a few hours and watch those stains fade away.”
How can sunlight whiten socks?
Brightening clothing naturally using sunlight is an age-old technique known as “sunning” — a remarkably simple method for making socks look fresher without resorting to chemicals or splashing out any cash.
It may sound peculiar, but sunlight emits ultraviolet radiation, which carries sufficient energy to break down stubborn organic stains such as sweat, body oils and even food residues.
These stains are dissolved into smaller compounds, making them appear less pigmented, which helps to lighten or eliminate them altogether.
Sunlight also provides the energy needed to trigger oxidation reactions, whereby oxygen interacts with stains and breaks them down, gradually helping fabrics appear whiter.
Ultraviolet light is also widely recognised for its ability to kill odour-causing bacteria that contribute to yellowing in sweat-prone areas like socks, keeping fabrics smelling fresher for longer.
Sunning won’t replace a proper wash, but it can help restore the appearance of fabric and keep it looking its best without constantly pouring bleach into your washing machine.
How to try sunning white socks
Simply hang your white socks on a washing line or drying rack outside just before midday, when the sun is at its peak.
Marilee said: “For optimal stain removal and bleaching, put clothes outside when the sun is at its strongest. This is usually at high-noon to about 3pm.”
Place your socks in direct sunlight, turning them after a few hours to ensure both sides receive adequate sun exposure. Avoid leaving them out for extended periods, as prolonged overexposure can weaken the sock fibres.
After several hours, give the socks a thorough shake before bringing them back indoors — they should appear noticeably whiter and smell considerably fresher.
Your socks ought to remain stain-free throughout the summer months, allowing you to make the most of the warm weather without fretting over your laundry.
Should the socks still appear dull or discoloured, try soaking them in lemon juice or soda crystals beforehand, as this will help enhance the ultraviolet effect.
It’s also worth noting that this sunlight method will only prove effective on white or light-coloured clothing, as it will naturally cause darker garments to fade.
