Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Michael Caine are among the stars of The Muppets’ take on Charles Dickens’ beloved tale

Nothing screams Christmas like a talking frog. With the festive season here once more, many of us are turning our attention to which beloved films we’ll be enjoying this year, and a must-watch for many is The Muppet Christmas Carol.

This 1992 classic sees Kermit and the gang perform a unique take on a Charles Dickens classic. Oscar-winner Michael Caine stars alongside a stacked Muppet cast featuring Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and The Great Gonzo, with the latter serving as narrator and a ‘Muppetised’ version of Dickens himself.

Now more than 30 years old, The Muppet Christmas Carol has become a staple of the festive season for many and is often featured in lists of the best ever Christmas films. Empire readers voted it the fourth best Christmas film of all time, behind Die Hard, It’s a Wonderful Life and Gremlins.

Directed by Brian Henson – the son of Muppets creator Jim Henson – The Muppet Christmas Carol is an adaptation of Dickens’ 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol. It sees Caine take on the role of mean-spirited penny-pincher Ebenezer Scrooge and closely follows the original story.

The official synopsis reads: “The Muppets’ rendition of Charles Dickens’ classic tale puts a unique twist on that fateful Christmas Eve, when Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Together with kind, humble Bob Cratchit and his family, the Spirits open Scrooge’s eyes – and his heart – to the true meaning of Christmas.”
