Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds was spotted on FaceTime during celebrations as Sam Smith scored against Chelsea, with wife Blake Lively in attendance for the FA Cup fifth round clash

Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds was caught on FaceTime during the celebrations of Sam Smith’s opening goal against Chelsea in the FA Cup. The Red Dragons hosted the eight-time FA Cup champions in Wales on Saturday evening, hoping to produce another giant-killing act after eliminating Nottingham Forest in the third round.

Chelsea fielded a squad packed with Premier League talent, including Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro Neto, but it was Wrexham who struck first as Smith fired low past Robert Sanchez following Callum Doyle’s long pass.

As the players rejoiced with the fans, television cameras panned to Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in their directors’ box to capture their reaction. However, Reynolds seemed to be sharing a moment with someone on his mobile.

Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, accompanied the two Hollywood owners for what represents the club’s most significant fixture under their ownership to date.

Smith nearly added a second before the break, whilst Ryan Longman drew a fine stop from Robert Sanchez after 30 minutes.

The Premier League side equalised just before the interval through a fortunate own goal, though. Garnacho’s right-footed effort was cleared off the line by George Thomason, only to deflect off Arthur Okonkwo and cross the line.

Reynolds and McElhenney have been involved with the club since their National League days and have presided over three consecutive promotions, taking them all the way to the Championship.

The club currently occupy a play-off position after 35 matches, meaning another promotion, to the Premier League, remains within reach.

The co-owners revealed last month that manager Phil Parkinson has a “job for life” at the club after his help in dragging them within touching distance of the top-flight. “I don’t know [if] I have the words to fully describe how integral Phil has been to the story and success of Wrexham,” McElhenney told The Athletic.

“Ryan and I talk all the time, and I just don’t see a scenario where Phil Parkinson gets fired. It doesn’t make any sense.

“He has been the architect, the creator of this. From our perspective, he’s got the job for life. Unless he finds another job he wants to go off and do, he’s our coach. He’s our manager. He’s our guy.

“I know that sounds silly and maybe irresponsible to say publicly, but the truth is that’s how we feel. And we have always worn our hearts on our sleeves. Always been as honest as possible.”
