A popular Wetherspoons pub closed after an ‘incident involving a customer’, the pub chain said

A popular Wetherspoons pub closed after what the company said was an incident involving a customer.

The Richard Hopkins pub in Newton Abbott was shut shortly before 1pm, according to local punters. One person claimed on social media that staff had “kicked everyone out”, DevonLive reports.

A number of theories circulated online, ranging from the loss of a key microwave oven to a suggestion that a customer was injured during an incident inside the venue.

A spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon said the pub reopened at 5.30pm today, adding: “There was an incident in the pub involving a customer.”

The building dates back to the 1850s and takes its name from former landowner and local baker Richard Hopkins, whose family were millers at Sherbourne Mills in the 18th century, according to the pub chain’s website.
