The list includes its first ever pub in continental Europe, which will open in Spain next month

Wetherspoon has confirmed the locations of 12 new pubs that are set to open before July.

The list includes its first ever pub in continental Europe, which will open in Alicante Airport, Spain, next month. The new pub will be named Castell de Santa Bàrbera and will welcome customers from February 9.

It will open seven days a week, from 6am to 9pm, and will have nearly 1,000 square foot of customer space on one level, together with an external terrace with customer seating.

It comes after Wetherspoon issued a new profits warning after the pub group revealed its costs rose by £45million in the first half of its financial year

This includes rising bills for energy, wages and business rates. Wetherspoon said profits in the first half are “likely to be lower” year on year.

It comes despite a pick up in like-for-like sales growth over the festive quarter, to 6.1% in the 12 weeks to January 18, up from 4.7% in the previous three months.

Over the key Christmas period, comparable sales jumped 8.8% in the three weeks to January 4. Wetherspoon runs around 800 pubs across the UK.

Founder and chairman Sir Tim Martin said: “Costs have been higher than anticipated, with energy, wages, repairs and business rates, for example, increasing by £45 million in the first 25 weeks.

“Profits in the first half are likely to be lower than the comparable period in the previous financial year.

“If the current sales momentum continues, the company currently anticipates a full year trading outcome slightly below that achieved in 2024-25.”

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is poised to unveiled a package of relief for pubs, thought to be worth about £300million. Pubs, like many hospitality businesses, are facing the end of coronavirus business rates relief in April.

At the same time, a new system for the way business rates are calculated is due to come into force.
