A money-saving Wetherspoon hack could see diners pay up to 50% less for the same meals, a saving expert says
Customers could use a Wetherspoon trick to cut food bills by as much as 50% – yet the vast majority of diners remain completely in the dark, says a bargain-hunting expert. Now punters are being urged to check one straightforward thing before placing their order, after a viral money-saving tip revealed that some diners could be forking out nearly twice as much for the very same meal.
The little-known trick involves comparing prices between different Wetherspoon pubs using the chain’s app before deciding where to eat. While many customers presume prices are uniform across the country, food and drink costs can actually differ between individual pubs – even, it is claimed, those situated in the same town.
In one example highlighted online, an all-day brunch reportedly cost £10.26 at a Wetherspoon in Milton Keynes. Yet just a short drive away at Captain Ridley’s Shooting Party in nearby Bletchley, the very same meal was apparently on offer for just £5.75.
A further comparison revealed that ham, egg and chips with a soft drink cost a reported £8.33 at The Roebuck Inn in Nottingham, while the identical order came to just £5.51 at The Gooseberry Bush, situated less than a mile away, diners say. The tip was shared by money-saving expert Jordon Cox, known online as Coupon Kid UK, who posts regular shopping and dining deals on social media.
In a video explaining the trick, he told followers: “Did you know Wetherspoon pubs offer different pricing at each restaurant? This can even happen in the exact same town if there are more than one Spoons.”
Jordon recommended customers use the Wetherspoon app to check nearby branches before venturing out. He explained diners with several Wetherspoon pubs in their area could potentially cut costs simply by walking a bit further for their meal.
Wetherspoon diners say ‘I never noticed this’
The advice has caught many social media users off guard, with some confessing they’d never realised the chain operated varying pricing structures between pubs. One person said: “I live in MK and never noticed this. Bletchley is usually our go-to one. Wow thanks.”
Another person said: “I guess it’s time to start cherrypicking the Spoons I go to.” Someone else said: “Coupon Kid telling us what not to spend money on, I like this.”
Others praised Jordon for the money-saving advice, with one simply commenting: “Thank you.” Wetherspoon has long employed location-based pricing, with factors such as rent, business rates and running costs affecting menu prices at individual pubs.
This means customers prepared to travel slightly further could end up paying considerably less for precisely the same food and drink. For frequent diners, those savings could rapidly mount up.
Wetherspoon has spoken openly about the subject in the past. In a statement issued last year, the pub chain said: Wetherspoon takes pride in offering its drinks and food at value for money prices at its pubs across the UK and Republic of Ireland. All prices for both drink and food are listed in the individual pubs.
“Wetherspoon is transparent about the fact that prices will vary in some areas – for example prices in central London will be higher than those in north Wales. This is, among other reasons, due to higher property prices and the running of the pubs.“However, even in the locations where prices might be higher than in other Wetherspoon pubs, the prices are still good value and in many cases, lower than competing pubs.”
