Snow is expected to fall across Britain very soon as temperatures begin to drop, new weather forecast maps show – but a few lucky areas will escape the wintry blast

Snow will sweep across multiple parts of the UK in just a few days’ time, according to new forecasts.

Weather maps from WXCharts show a chilly wintry front sweeping the nation on Thursday 12 December, sending temperatures plummeting. As much as 10cm of snow could fall in some of the worst-hit areas around the Scottish Borders, while northwest England, coastal areas of Wales and much of Northern Ireland will also be in for significant accumulations. There will be a few areas that escape the falling flakes however – including Yorkshire, East Anglia, the Midlands and southeast England. Rain is also forecast in the southwest.

Chilly conditions are also forecast across the UK, with minimum temperatures forecast -1C in the Highlands, 0C-1C in the north of England, 1C-2C in Wales and the Midlands, and 3C-4C in the south. WX Charts maps meanwhile show 1C in Northern Ireland.

Netweather’s long-range forecast outlines a more unsettled turn to the weather between December 9 and 17, opening up the possibility of further cold snaps in the north. It adds: “This means that there could be snow for some, particularly on high ground and in the north.”

It comes after bookies tipped next month to be the coldest December on record. Having been a 4/1 shot earlier this week, odds have now been slashed in half to just 2/1 on a record-breaking cold December.

Elsewhere, it remains a 1/2 chance for any part of the UK to wake up to a White Christmas. Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Things are about to get a whole lot colder over the UK, if the latest odds are anything to go by, while a White Christmas is looking increasingly more likely.”

In the meantime, more rain is forecast in the north and west on Friday, with showers expected to spread to the east by the end of the day. Milder temperatures are also forecast across much of the country, reaching 10C in London and Edinburgh, 11C in Cardiff, and 13C on Belfast.
