Ministers are rolling out emergency funding for homes

Struggling households are set to receive a portion of more than £50million in emergency assistance, as ministers act to alleviate the pressure of soaring energy costs on some of the most vulnerable.

The funding targets homes not linked to the gas grid – many located in rural areas – where residents have experienced steep rises in heating oil prices due to the Middle East crisis. Officials confirmed the money will be allocated to help those struggling with bills, with priority given to low-income and vulnerable households who depend on alternative fuels such as heating oil, LPG and solid fuels.

The initiative follows a series of government measures designed to protect households from the energy crisis, particularly those who have historically been excluded from mainstream support schemes linked to gas and electricity.

In earlier statements, ministers have recognised that off-grid homes can be “particularly exposed” to unpredictable global fuel prices, with limited capacity to spread costs through monthly direct debits.

The latest £50million package will be delivered through existing local authority support systems, enabling councils to identify those most in need, including pensioners and families on lower incomes.

It comes after previous schemes such as the Alternative Fuel Payment, which offered direct support to households not using mains gas, as well as the Household Support Fund – a sum of money provided to councils to assist residents with essentials including energy bills.

Campaigners have long maintained that rural and off-grid households face a “double disadvantage”, forking out more for energy while frequently residing in poorly insulated homes. The ongoing Middle East crisis has further compounded the strain on hard-pressed households.

Ministers say the fresh funding is intended to fill shortfalls and deliver swift relief. A government spokesperson said support is being “targeted at those who need it most”, adding that assistance for off-grid users remains a priority alongside broader cost-of-living measures.

The £50million package is being distributed through existing local schemes, meaning the route to accessing help depends on where you live.

How to claim the support

The funding is expected to be channelled via the Household Support Fund, which is administered by local councils.
