The reward will be available for Virgin Media broadband and O2 customers from today until November 9, 2024 in the Priority app and website – here is what you need to know

Virgin Media O2 is offering railcards for just £10 to members of its Priority loyalty scheme.

Railcards give you a third off train travel and normally cost £30 for one year – so this deal marks a saving of £20. The reward will be available for Virgin Media broadband and O2 customers from today until November 9, 2024 in the Priority app and website.

Discount codes will be released daily at 9am for the following railcards: Network, 16-25, Disabled Persons, Family & Friends, Senior and Two Together Railcard. If the app shows that all the codes have been snapped up, it’s worth trying again the next day when more become available.

The average railcard holder saves £158 annually. Lisa Johnstone, Director, Priority, Loyalty & Reward at Virgin Media O2, said: “Priority is focused on helping our Virgin Media O2 customers get the most out of life while saving money where it matters the most.

“That’s why we’re thrilled to offer our Priority members a Railcard for just £10, saving up to 1/3 on train travel for the next 12 months. This exclusive reward will ease the cost of travel, giving our members access to meaningful experiences and the chance to share more special moments with loved ones.”

It comes after rail fares rose by 4.9% in England and Wales earlier this year. The increase was applied to regulated rail fares, such as season, anytime day, off-peak and super off-peak tickets. Regulated rail fares are usually linked to the Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure of inflation for the previous July, which for 2023 was 9%.

The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed it would cap the rise at 4.9% instead in a statement last December. But the latest increase still came on top of the 5.9% rise that was implemented in March 2023. Unregulated fares – which include advance, anytime, off-peak day and first class fares – are set by train companies.

There are plenty of other ways to save money on your train fare. The cheapest tickets are normally released 12 weeks ahead of time – so if you’re able to, try and plan your journey as far in advance as possible. See as well if you can split your journey to save costs.

This involves splitting your journey up into different sections, so you’re buying lots of multiple tickets instead of just one single ticket. Finally, if you’re a regular traveller, see if you can save money by purchasing a season ticket or flexi ticket. How much you could save depends on how often you travel but it can add up to hundreds of pounds.
