A vet has settled the debate on if dogs should really wear coats in January. As the weather turns colder, it’s worth listening to Dr Katrina Warren’s expert advice

As the temperatures drop, many of us struggle in the cold, but you may be wondering if your dog can get chilly too. With exercise being important for pets, much like it is for us humans, there are a few things you may be considering before taking them outside.

There’s already been snow spotted in some parts of the country, and the Met Office has issued further snow and ice warnings for parts of the UK this week, so you need to think of your dogs at this particularly nippy time. If you’re wondering how you should dress them for winter walks, vet Dr Katrina Warren has settled a pretty important debate.

For years, you may have pondered if your pooch really needs to wear a coat in colder months like January, and the question has finally been answered. Dr Warren explained if there are any breeds that really need to put on a coat.

In a candid video, she said: “Six dog breeds that really should wear a jacket in winter. Starting with the Dachshund. These guys have a short coat, a very long body and low legs. They’re very close to the ground. They feel the cold.

“The Greyhound. They’re sighthounds, they have a low percentage of body fat and a short coat. They really feel it too. So do their Whippet friends.

“They are also sighthounds. They love to snuggle up in the warmest place in their house. They need a jacket outdoors. Same with the Italian Greyhounds.

“The smallest of the sighthounds, they really feel the cold. The tiny little pocket rocket dogs like the Chihuahua. They struggle to keep themselves warm, and the Chinese crested.

“They’re hairless dogs. That speaks for itself. Of course, there are other breeds that need a jacket. Dogs with a short coat generally benefit from a jacket and senior dogs too.”

In other words, it can largely depend on the breed of dog. However, there are a few things you need to know about when it comes to keeping dogs warm.

Should dogs wear jackets during winter?

To put it bluntly, yes. Most dogs need to wear coats in cold, wet or windy weather. This is especially important for small breeds, short-haired dogs (like Greyhounds, Dobermans), puppies, senior dogs and those with health issues.

Coats will help offer warmth, protection and comfort, though thick-coated breeds like Huskies generally don’t need them unless it’s extremely cold. The decision often depends on the breed, age, health, coat type and conditions.

It’s key for pet owners to look out for signs like shivering or hunched posture. This means they may need help to warm up.

However, coats aren’t always needed. Breeds like Huskies, Malamutes and German Shepherds are naturally insulated. Also, when the weather is warm, they aren’t always required, as it can lead to the dog overheating.
