Temperatures fell over the weekend — and rain sweep across the country, heaviest across the Scottish Highlands — but the mercury is set to rise again, weather forecasters say
Temperatures are set to rocket again this week, according to weather forecasters.
Weather maps show the mercury is anticipated to threaten to reach 20C by Thursday, with the warmest parts likely to be across the East of England and the Southeast of England. It follows a wet and windy weekend, during which 43mm of rain battered parts of the Scottish Highlands and around 20mm fell in Shap, Cumbria.
But the outlook for this week looks pleasant, with the mercury rising throughout the week to peak on Thursday afternoon. A NetWeather spokesperson said: “Thursday looks to become drier and brighter with sunny spells and only isolated mainly light showers, warmer too, with temperatures reaching the mid-teens across England, Wales and eastern Scotland, perhaps high teens across eastern England.”
Forecasters at alternative team, Metdesk, even predict temperatures are expected to be greater with around 20C on the cards across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Greater London among other areas.

The picture looks so pleasant that some forecasters have even compared the period to a “mini heatwave,” during which it is expected to be sunny and dry for several days across most regions. Thursday looks particularly dry, notably across the East of England.
The NetWeather spokesperson, meteorologist Nick Finnis, added: “Next weekend – there are signs that high pressure will build in across the UK from both the Atlantic and NE Europe, bringing mostly dry and settled conditions across many areas and pleasantly warm and sunny conditions too.”
But it comes following downpours on Wednesday — despite the balmy temperatures. Due to this combination, it could be thundery again in some places, including Northern Ireland and parts of the Northwest of England. Parts of Wales will experience bleak conditions on Wednesday too.
Yet, the new weather maps show a contrast at the end of the week and into the weekend. The Met Office acknowledges this too, noting temperatures are anticipated to be “warmer than average” until at least next week. A spokesperson for the agency added: “Northern and eastern areas may well see plenty of dry weather. Temperatures likely remaining above average.”

The upturn in temperatures is expected to present more challenges for those with hayfever. It affects around 16 million people in the UK, many of which have likely experienced the first of their annual springtime symptoms recently.
An NHS GP is now urging hay fever sufferers to add some different tools to their bag of treatments this year alongside the antihistamines and nasal sprays. Dr Asimah Hanif explained some stranger tricks and hacks that can help keep the spring allergens at bay even when you have to be venturing outside.
