As more unsettled conditions are on the way to the country, leading bookmaker Coral has cut the odds to 2-1 on next month ending as the wettest November on record in the UK

Forecasters have warned that after a largely unsettled October, next month could bring more wet and windy weather to the country.

The Met Office has warned that this weekend will bring a spell of unsettled weather, with an area of low pressure likely to bring strong winds and outbreaks of rain, particularly to western parts of the country. Whilst some areas may see some brighter drier periods, many will see further heavy blustery showers, forecasters said.

It added that coastal areas could be hit by gales on Saturday. Meanwhile, Sunday will also be characterised by a mix of sunshine and showers, with cloudy skies in the afternoon and some rain moving in from the Atlantic by the evening.

It will remain windy, with the potential for coastal gales to develop in the west later in the day, forecasters said, adding that temperatures are expected to be near average for the time of year.

Leading bookmaker Coral has has cut the odds to 2-1 – from 4-1 – on next month ending as the wettest November on record in the UK. The firm also makes it 6-4 for the wind speed to reach as high as 100mph in the mainland UK this weekend.

“It looks set to be a wet start to the new month, and with some heavy downpours forecast to fall, we have slashed the odds in half on it ending as a record-wet November,” said Coral’s John Hill. “The odds have also been cut on the wind speed reaching as high as 100mph in the mainland over the weekend,” added Hill.

The Met Office’s long-range forecast from Wednesday, November 5 to Friday, November 5 says: “The changeable and at times unsettled weather is likely to continue to start this period, with low pressure dominating the UK. This means further showers or longer spells of rain at times. All parts could see some heavy rain, but it is likely that western areas will be wettest.

“Strong winds are likely at times, with gales possible in the west. Equally there should also be some drier or clearer interludes, these more prevalent further east.

“A transition to a less unsettled pattern is possible later in the period making drier interludes more common. Above average temperatures are most likely, with a reduced incidence of overnight frost and fog, compared to normal, especially at first.”

The second half of the month could be less unsettled, according to forecasters. The long-range forecast from Saturday, November 15 to Saturday, November 29 reads: “A transition to a less unsettled pattern is possible through mid-November.

With time, there is a greater chance of incidences of high pressure bringing more in the way of dry weather, but also increasing the chances of overnight fog and frost.

“There may however still be periods of rain, showers, and stronger winds, especially in the west. Weather patterns are very uncertain during late November. Overall, near or above average temperatures are most likely though some colder spells are possible, especially should any prolonged settled spells develop.”
