Brits brace for rain every day this week as temperatures drop sharply, but a continental bake is set to bring 32C heat back from mid-June

The beginning of June will see Britain battered by rain every single day for a week as temperatures plummet by half – before further 32C (90F) heat returns from later next week.

Following the record-breaking 35C late-May heatwave, forecasters are predicting daily rainfall for a week across the South and North. Highs will drop 17C to just 18C in the South and 16C across parts of the North on most days this week.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “A big change is on the way.” And a Met Office forecaster said: “After the record heatwave, low pressure arrives to start summer. The next week will see rain, brisk winds and lower temperatures.”

However, a 1,000 mile wide continental scorcher is expected from June 10 onwards, with temperatures reaching up to 32C as the heat intensifies, reports the Daily Star.

BBC Weather said: “Mid-June has the potential for hot temperatures.”

A Met Office forecaster said: “Very warm smells are possible as we head further into June.”

The Met Office indicates that a significantly hotter than normal period through to early August is eight times more probable than much cooler than average conditions.

The Met Office outlook through to early August said: “There is an increase chance of warm conditions and heatwaves.”

It comes as at least 15 people are believed to have died in the May heatwave after getting into difficulties in bodies of water.

South Yorkshire Police said a search remained ongoing at the River Don in Mexborough on Sunday after the force had received reports than an 11-year-old boy had entered the water but had not been seen getting out on Saturday evening.

On Saturday, Nottinghamshire Police said a 19-year-old man had died after entering the water at Balderton Lake, off Heron Way in New Balderton.

The hot weather has attracted many people to open-water swimming, resulting in a number of deaths in South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Cornwall, Hampshire, Warwickshire, Cheshire, Pembrokeshire, Lincolnshire and Lancashire over recent days. These include a 72-year-old woman who died after being pulled from the water at West Angle Bay beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales, on Sunday and a 13-year-old boy, understood to be Reco Puttock, who died after getting into difficulty at Leadbeater Dam, near Halifax, West Yorkshire, on Monday.
