The UK has braced for “disruptive snow”, ice and cold temperatures after the Met Office issued a flurry of yellow weather warnings across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England
Brits are tackling power cuts and travel chaos with ‘impassable’ roads after an Arctic blast covered parts of the UK overnight.
The UK braced for “disruptive snow”, ice and cold temperatures yesterday after the Met Office issued a flurry of yellow weather warnings across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England. Up to 20 centimetres of snow was expected to accumulate in the worst affected areas in the country’s “first taste of winter”, according to the forecaster.
The yellow warnings are in place until 10 am today – however several areas have been extended until 10am tomorrow.
Within the affected areas, the warning states that there is a chance of power cuts, disruption to road and public transport and the risk of communities being cut off as a result, the weather service said.
“An area of snow may bring disruption to a central swathe of the UK during Monday night and Tuesday morning,” it states.
Snow and hail showers were predicted to affect northern parts of Scotland at times, becoming heavier and more frequent on Monday night, through much of Tuesday and then overnight into Wednesday morning. Predicting the downpour, the service said: “2 to 5 cm of snow is likely to accumulate quite widely, with up to 10 cm in some places by the end of Tuesday, and perhaps 15 to 20 cm accumulating above 300 metres.”
The Met Office further warned Brits that the snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. They added that drivers should keep themselves and others safe by “planning your route, checking for delays and road closures, and amending your travel plans if necessary.
“People cope better when they have prepared in advance for the risk of power cuts or being cut off from services and amenities due to the snow. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.”
Schools up and down the country are also set to close as the Met Office warns of dangerous conditions caused by the arctic snow blast.
You can check if schools have closed in your area on the UK government website here.
