One region of the UK will see an accumulation of 25 inches of snow build up in the coming days, weather forecasters say, as the brutal -10C Arctic cold snap continues
Six weather warnings are in place today — with one region of the UK expected to see an accumulation of 25 inches of snow.
The Met Office is again concerned for snow and ice today and issued the alerts to remind Brits travel disruption is likely. Hundreds of schools are closed, including scores across Wales, for the safety of youngsters due to the icy conditions.
Temperatures are widely expected to struggle to exceed freezing today, and eastern parts of the country will be the coldest. The conditions are optimum for fresh snowfall with the Northern Highlands and the Isle of Skye expected to be buried under 65cm of snow in the coming days.
These areas are part of those subject to the only amber weather warning in place, which states “heavy snow is expected to lead to travel disruption on Tuesday”. The Met Office warns of “travel delays on roads, stranding some vehicles and passengers” throughout Tuesday in Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian and Highlands & Eilean Siar.

There are five other weather warnings in place, including four for snow and ice and one just for ice. A further snow bomb is expected later this week too, heaviest across the Midlands, as low pressure sweeps in from the southwest.
The Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, said: “The UK will continue to experience a range of winter weather hazards through this week, with low temperatures as well as snow showers and the risk of ice for many. A number of severe weather warnings have been issued and these are likely to be updated through the week so do keep up to date with the forecast.”
And the other weather warnings for today include the snow and ice alert for parts of North East England and Yorkshire Humber. In relation to this, the Met Office says: “Scattered snow showers and icy patches have the potential to cause disruption to travel in places on Monday into Tuesday morning.”
