Advanced weather modelling maps show some serious snow is set to fall across the UK next week, with some parts of the country possibly seeing as much as 11 inches of the white stuff
Weather maps reveal the exact time snow should start falling across the UK next week, possibly bringing 11 inches to some parts of the country.
The Met Office has warned of “hill snow” and “possible icy stretches” from Monday through to Wednesday. And WXCharts’ weather maps show where in the UK these chilly conditions are most likely.
The ECMWF model shows snow falling across Scotland and northern parts of England at midnight on Monday and into the early hours of Tuesday. Where flurries are most intense, particularly in western Scotland, snow could be falling at a rate of around 3cm per hour. Snow is expected as far south as Manchester at this time.
Blizzards are expected to move eastward throughout the morning, with snow falling in Newcastle by 6am. Central Scotland can expect to see snow falling at a rate of around 2cm per hour at this time.
And snow depth charts reveal the full extent of this wintry blast. As much as 27cm (11 inches) of snow is expected to settle in the Scottish Highlands. Rural parts of northern England could see as much as 9cm (3.5 inches).
The Met Office’s forecast for Monday to Wednesday states: “Rain pushing into northern and western regions with some hill snow and possible icy stretches. Drier further south and east with some brighter spells. Often breezy. Slowly turning less cold.”
For the rest of the month, the Met Office says temperatures are “likely be above average”. Its forecast for February 20 to March 1 states: “Atlantic frontal systems likely spread across the UK from the west at the start of this period. These will bring spells of rain to many parts of the UK, although the heaviest rainfall will probably be in western areas. Some eastern areas could end up largely dry. Strong winds are also likely at times, especially along coasts.
“Through the second half of this period, toward the turn of the month, periods of unsettled weather are expected at times, with Atlantic weather systems continuing to move eastwards across the UK – these could bring heavy rain and strong winds at times. Some drier, brighter periods with showers are likely between systems. Temperatures will most likely be above average.”
