A sweeping Arctic weather front is set to hit the UK in the first week of March, with 13 cities bracing for heavy snow as depths could reach up to 59cm in the worst-affected areas

A fresh, extensive cold weather system is heading towards the UK and looks set to deliver significant snowfall, according to weather maps.

The menacing Arctic blast is poised to grip a substantial 13 UK cities.

Stretching 578 miles from Oban in Scotland down to Plymouth, the massive snow event is expected to strike the nation during early March. Fresh weather maps from WXCHARTS show a deep purple mass blanketing vast portions of the UK, signalling a drop into freezing temperatures, with certain regions preparing for a severe cold snap.

The Arctic conditions will be unforgiving, with the hardest-hit locations experiencing snow accumulations of 59cm.

Weather maps suggest the bitter conditions will barrel into the country on March 5 at 6pm.

Large portions of Scotland will be buried beneath snow. The North West, North East alongside Yorkshire and the Humber will also experience substantial snowfall.

Come midnight on March 6, Perth and Kinross will witness the heaviest accumulation with snow depths projected to reach 15cm. Argyll and Bute along with Stirling will experience snow depths hitting 10cm.

Down in England, the Midlands may see 5cm of snowfall per hour, whilst northern areas could experience up to 3cm. North and Mid Wales are bracing for snowfall of up to 5cm, whilst West Wales might also experience a light sprinkling of the white stuff.

The snow is set to reach as far south as Devon and Cornwall, with an hourly forecast of 5mm.

By the evening of 6 March, Perth and Kinross could be blanketed by a staggering 59cm of snow. Argyll and Bute are expected to be carpeted in 14cm of snow, whilst central Scotland could see up to 7cm.

Over in England, Cumbria is predicted to bear the brunt of the snowfall with depths potentially reaching 17cm, whilst Durham could see up to 10cm.

Forecasts suggest that North Wales will see snow depths of around 7cm, Central Wales could witness peaks of 4cm, and similar levels are anticipated for Bath in the South West of England.
