A cordon was placed around the Fareham Police Station after a suspected unexploded ordnance device was handed to staff – sparking an evacuation of the premises and nearby buildings
A police station was forced to evacuate after a suspected unexploded bomb was handed to staff.
A large cordon was placed around Fareham Police Station, sparking an evacuation of the premises and nearby buildings. Shoppers in Fareham city centre also reported being evacuated from a Tesco store on Quay Street, where another cordon was erected. It came as the town was due to hold its Christmas light switch on that evening. Fareham Borough Council urged residents to keep away from the area in a message posted to Facebook.
Hampshire Police said an unexploded bomb was brought into Fareham Police Station, which triggered the lockdown. The force added that the Royal Navy Ordnance Explosive Disposal team attended to remove the device before the cordon was lifted.
A spokesperson said: “At 1.46pm this afternoon, Saturday, November 22, a suspected unexploded ordnance was brought into Fareham Police Station. A 100 metre cordon was put in place and a number of premises were evacuated as a precaution.
“The Royal Navy Ordnance Explosive Disposal team attended and took the device away before the cordon was lifted.”
