Block paving can look fantastic outside your property, but keeping it clean all year round can be a chore. However, one expert suggests an unusual tip for cleaning it

Block paving can be one of the most striking enhancements for your property, delivering a visually appealing driveway that won’t deteriorate like tarmac or require re-stoning like gravel surfaces.

The sole drawback, beyond the upfront expense, is the maintenance. Maintaining block paving and ensuring it remains free from weeds and algae as well as moss and mould can prove an ongoing and costly struggle throughout both summer and winter months.

However, according to block paving specialists, there exists a method to clean block paving affordably and effortlessly without requiring any specialist chemicals or costly products – simply by utilising ordinary household washing powder.

Typically reserved for laundry duties, washing powder can apparently be employed to eliminate any and everything sprouting on block paving that shouldn’t be present.

Local company Block Paving Retford explains: “Washing powder does a great job at cleaning block paving. It gets rid of tough stains, dirt, and debris. The chemicals in it also kill moss and algae that grow on paving.

“You should mix a little washing powder with warm water for a cleaning solution. Let this solution sit on the paving for 10 minutes. Then gently scrub it with a soft brush. Block paving looks much better after using this method.

“Before you start, test the solution on a hidden part of the paving.” This ensures it won’t cause damage to the paving. Exercise caution with more delicate natural stone pavers. The washing powder could potentially harm them, reports the Express.

“Firstly, before cleaning block paving with washing powder, make sure you prepare the area. Take any outdoor furniture away to avoid damage. Then, sweep the paving to get rid of big dirt.

“Next, create a solution by mixing a little washing powder with warm water in a bucket. Pour this mix on the paving. Leave it for about 10 minutes. This lets the chemicals work to remove grime and stains.

“After waiting, use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub the paving in a diagonal way. Be careful not to harm the jointing compound between the blocks.

“Finally, rinse the paving very well with clean water. This cleans off any remaining dirt and detergent. For very dirty areas, you might have to do this more than once.”

It’s best to remove weeds before washing your driveway to ensure a smoother process. If you have a gravel driveway, you can use another type of homemade concoction to deal with a weed invasion.

Some common culprits on driveways range from grassy nuisances like henbit and purslane to the stubborn broadleaf or dandelion, all of which grow easily between decorative stones. If you’re keen to avoid store-bought weed killers and harsh chemicals, white vinegar and salt do the trick just as well.
